Yesterday’s question generated some great discussion.
While exact numbers vary depending on the study and how risk is measured, the general ranking based on the risk of serious injury or death for the average person is approximately:
1️⃣ Chiropractic Adjustments
2️⃣ Airplanes
3️⃣ Lightning Storms
4️⃣ Bathtubs
5️⃣ Aspirin
The surprising lesson isn’t that any of these are completely risk free.
It’s that our brains are not very good at estimating risk.
We often fear things that are unfamiliar while overlooking risks we encounter every day.
One item that surprises many people is aspirin.
Aspirin can be an incredibly useful medication when used appropriately. It has helped countless people and remains an important tool in medicine.
The surprise comes from how casually many of us think about it.
Because aspirin is available over the counter, it often feels harmless. In reality, it can contribute to serious complications including stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and other adverse effects, particularly with long term use.
For many people, medications like aspirin are best viewed as a temporary tool while we work to address the underlying problem whenever possible.
That may mean improving nutrition, reducing inflammation, increasing movement, managing stress, improving sleep, or finding the root cause of chronic pain rather than simply masking symptoms.
The goal is not to avoid medications when they are needed.
The goal is to need them less often because your health is improving.
The same is true for chiropractic care.
The goal is not endless treatment. The goal is helping people move better, feel better, and function better so they can get back to living their lives.
Perception and reality are not always the same thing. Sometimes the things we use every day carry more risk than the things we rarely think about.
What surprised you most about the rankings?
